uMngeni Municipality Deputy Mayor, Sandile Mnikathi led a joint operation between the uMngeni Municipality’s Economic Development, Planning and Human Settlements, uMgungundlovu District’s fire services and environmental health, SAPS Howick, uMngeni Traffic, Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism in the province, Liquor Authority and Immigration Services, to assess business compliance in shops operating in Lidgetton, Lion’s River and Howick CBD.

Expired food items were condemned and alcohol confiscated from establishments that trade without a liquor licence.

Seven immigrants without proper documentation were arrested, one person was arrested for illegal gambling and one shop owner who employs illegal immigrants was fined R5000 by Immigration Services.

These operations are ongoing and we would like to issue a stern warning to shop owners who are operating illegally and those that are selling stale food to communities.

This is in line with our key priority number 5; building safer communities.
