The 67 Minutes for Mandela on the former world’s statesman’s birthday by uMngeni Municipality in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal South African Local Government Association (Salga) sought to assist in alleviating poverty.

Hosted in Ligdetton at the Jabula Combined School recently the municipality and Salga undertook the following activities:-

  • Donation of school shoes to 100 learners
  • Donation of dignity packs for  girls from Grades 5 – 12
  • Toiletries for all learners
  • Donation of paint and educational books

By devoting 67 minutes of their time – one minute for every year of Mandela's public service – people can make a small gesture of solidarity with humanity and a step towards a global movement for good.

The activity in Lidgetton was held in partnership with Love Life Youth Centre who engaged the learners on issues of HIV & AIDS, substance and alcohol abuse and teenage pregnancy; Department of Health – who conducted screenings; Department of Social Development who donated food parcel to 100 learners and the Department of Sport and Recreation who coordinated a sports day on the day.Image
